Me & OldJim

Photo taken October 2003

I met Jim Robertson via the internet back in the 1990's. It was an email from him to me with a graphic he had created for me to use on a genealogy web site I operated at the time. Out of the blue he simply created an image for me to use and sent it to me.

Thus began a long term friendship for me with a unique man I learned to know as "OldJim".

I have no idea how many hours we talked on the phone. Thousands of hours I know. We are both from Illinois and that seemed to create a kinship of some kind for us. I learned so much from him it is hard to make a list of the hundreds of things that we "got into" together over those many years. I learned how to create graphics from him and also learned many things about computers. He was indeed my "Guru" that I could count on to bail me out in case I made a mistake. I also like to think that on occasion I passed along a bit of information that he found helpful also.

When I met OldJim he lived in Vegas, later after a serious health issue his niece and nephews rallied around him and brought him to Chicago to look after and care for him. What a wonderful family he has. During his several years in Chicago, I had the pleasure to visit with him one afternoon. We had a wonderful time together, like two kids playing marbles we said.

I miss him, it was a normal part of my life to talk with him several times a week. It was comfortable just talking, touching base, about any and everything, it made my day...

One conversation we had, after many years, he implied that I was now my own "Guru". Well, I don't think so, but thank you Jim for saying that.

Jim had a small circle of friends, it is an honor to have been one of them.

For many years I have had a link on my web site to OldJim's web site. It no longer exists but the link will remain on my site to this page in honor of my friend and mentor Jim Robertson, "OldJim". Rest in peace, we will meet again my friend.

Jim, the little square at the bottom of the page is for you, I know you would want and expect to see it there on one of my pages :)
