In 1730 or 1731 Nathaniel Gunn came among the earlier settlers to Montague, MA. This according to the records that are available to us, made Nathaniel among the original 40 settlers of Montague.

Nathaniel kept a tavern there, until some time after 1763. It is believed that the ownership and operation of the tavern was then passed to his son Nathaniel.

It is noted in a book that we have about Montague about the tavern that: "Being the place where wayfaring Baptist ministers always stopped, it came to be known as the Baptist tavern."
